A1 to reopen on Sunday this weekend not Monday

Construction work on Fort Bridge.

Highways England say the A1 will reopen at 6am on Sunday this weekend, not Monday as they originally said.

The A1 will be closed in both directions from 8pm on Friday until 6am on Sunday between junction 51 (Leeming Bar) and Scotch Corner as opposed to being closed until Monday 16 at 6am.

Officials have apologised for the error.

A 300-tonne crane will demolish the temporary bridge near Catterick.

Highways officials say the work marks another milestone in the completion of the major A1 Leeming to Barton improvement scheme.

The crane will be positioned on the A1 to carry out the demolition and drivers are advised the road will be closed over the weekend so the work can be carried out safely.

The temporary bridge was put in place in July 2015 to allow space for a new bridge over the A1 and an extra lane to be added to the road as part of the Leeming to Barton major upgrade.

The new bridge provides an east west link across the A1, connecting the communities of Catterick Garrison, and Catterick and Brompton.

The bridge will be open to pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians from Monday.

The bridge will open to traffic next month once the road has been resurfaced and other minor work has been carried out.
