
Around 1,000 pigs died in a fire at a farm yesterday.
Dozens of firefighters from across the county were called to the blaze at a farm at Newsham, near Richmond, at just after 6.30pm on Sunday.
They arrived to find a fire in a barn measuring 60m by 60m which contained a large number of pigs.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said that sadly around 1,000 pigs died in the incident.
A spokesman said the cause of the fire was yet to be determined.
Eight crews attended the incident at its height, with a further four crews called in to relieve those already attending.
Crews used hose reel jets, dams and ground monitors.
This incident remains open with crews scheduled to keep checking the site.
