A 13-year-old girl has died after being rescued from a river in the Yorkshire Dales.
Emergency services were called to the River Wharfe, at Burnsall, at about 6.30pm on Sunday following reports that the teenager had gone missing in the water.
North Yorkshire Police said the girl was located after a short search and was brought from the river before being airlifted to hospital.
Despite the efforts of members of the public, emergency responders and hospital staff, she later died.
Police said her identity has not yet been released.
In a statement, the force said: “At this stage we are not in a position to release her identity.
“Our thanks go to the members of the public who helped at the scene.”
The incident comes during a period of unusually warm weather which has seen large numbers of people visit rivers, lakes and coastal areas across the country.
The latest tragedy means the number of reported open water deaths across the UK over the past eight days has risen to 17 following the recent heatwave.
A number of fatal incidents have been recorded in recent days in locations including Yorkshire, Cornwall, Hampshire, Warwickshire, Cheshire, Pembrokeshire, Lincolnshire and Lancashire.
North Yorkshire Police has not released any further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident, and enquiries are continuing.
