A youth theatre group is celebrating its first successful season.

Drama tutors Sue Hedges and Tracey Lacey left the Georgian Theatre Royal Youth Theatre to set up the Richmondshire Youth Theatre in July 2016.

During their first season, Richmondshire Youth Theatre (RYT) has staged five different productions that were performed in nine different venues across Richmondshire.

This story continues after the adverts:

With the support of their past pupils, RYT was able to write and produce four new plays, stage a musical production, perform at the Richmond Meet, win an award at a One Act Play Festival and see their membership grow from 57 to more than 80.

RYT’s young people were nominated by Councillor Linda Curran for a NYCC Community Award for their self penned play ‘We are Such Stuff as Memories are Made On’ a touring production that raised awareness of The Friends of Garget Walker House, a local charity that supports those in our community affected by dementia.

The touring cast were driven to the different venues by the Mayor of Richmond, Councillor Stuart Parsons who said: “This play was written by them, devised by them and performed by them and it played to sell out audiences.

“They are a shining example of the brilliance of youth and a reminder also that our futures are in safe hands.

Sue said: “We have had an amazing first season that went beyond anything we had imagined and we are so proud of all our pupils.

“We have been so lucky to have been supported by a team of talented mentors, volunteers and many of our Past Pupils, who are studying theatre at universities and top UK Drama Schools and others who now work professionally in the sector.

“Our past pupils have been a real asset to the current RYT members supporting their learning during many workshops and rehearsals.”

One of these past pupils was Cordelia Stevenson, who worked alongside the group for much of the season and is now performing professionally at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with her theatre company Silent Faces.

Richmondshire Youth Theatre has groups at Leyburn and Richmond and they are looking forward to their second season which begins in September.
