19-year-old dies after incident in Swaledale

 

A 19-year-old has died following an incident in Swaledale yesterday afternoon.

The emergency services were called to reports of people in difficulty at Wain Wath waterfall on the River Swale near Keld at about 5pm.

Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team said four people were reported to be in difficulties in the water.

Two people needed medical treatment and a 19-year-old was taken to James Cook Hospital by air ambulance, where sadly he was pronounced dead.

It is believed the man is from the Teesside area.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances, and a report will be prepared for the coroner, a North Yorkshire Police spokesman added.

Fire crews from Hawes and Reeth were called to the incident.

The water rescue teams from Ripon and Richmond were also sent to the scene.

The teenager who died was reported to have gone under the falls and washed downstream although the circumstances of the tragedy are not yet known.

A spokesman for Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team thanked the people of Keld for their help.
