Organisers of the Wensleydale Tournament of Song have announced that the 2021 event will not go-ahead.
The event’s council said they were very disappointed that they had to cancel this year`s tournament at the last minute due to Covid 19.
They added in a statement: “We have now made the difficult decision not to proceed with the tournament in 2021, again because of Covid-19.
“Since its inception in 1898 there have been only two previous occasions when the tournament has not been held annually for two or more consecutive years, both of these as a result of World Wars.
“We have now tentatively started making arrangements and are looking forward to an outstanding festival in 2022.”
Organisers are looking for more volunteers to get involved in the running of the event.
“We are looking for someone who would like to join our enthusiastic group of volunteers and support the tournament by acting as secretary.
“The role would require you to have all the usual secretarial and IT skills. Initially you would be required to help with correspondence but as we approach our next tournament there are many other areas in which you could assist.
“We all know how vitally important it is to keep music alive in the Dales. In this respect, the tournament is such an important event, having taken place since 1898 and being one of the oldest festivals in the country.
“It has promoted amateur dedication and effort both in music and spoken word to the delight of audiences over many years, with the hope that it will continue to do so for many years to come.”
