Richmond’s new bike park is set to move forward after volunteers secured £250,000 in funding to bring the project to life.
Construction of the community-led facility is due to begin in May, with a ‘soft’ opening planned for autumn 2026 and a full launch expected in spring 2027 following landscaping and biodiversity work.
The funding has been secured through a combination of grants and local support, including contributions from The National Lottery, Sport England, Broadacres Housing Association and the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, alongside donations from businesses and the wider community.
Led by a team of local volunteers, the project aims to create a high-quality cycling space for riders of all ages while promoting active travel, youth engagement and community wellbeing.
Plans for the park include bike skills and safety workshops, youth volunteering opportunities, environmental education and partnerships with local schools, helping to encourage young people to develop confidence and a sense of ownership in the space.
Chair of the Richmond Bike Park Committee, Louise Raine, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to have already reached this brilliant milestone and a huge thanks to all the organisations that have committed to the vision of this amazing project.
“The Bike Park is being built for everyone in the community, creating safe, high-quality cycling space and opportunities for young people to get involved. We can’t wait to get started in May.”
Although the main construction will be carried out by a specialist contractor, organisers say volunteers will continue to play a key role through community dig days, helping with planting, hedging, dry stone walling and general site preparation.
The team is also appealing for further support, including donations of materials such as benches, signage and landscaping supplies, as well as additional fundraising to enhance the facility and ensure its long-term sustainability.
