A 43-mile sponsored walk around a Wensleydale church benefice has raised more than £950 for a charity supporting homeless and vulnerable people.

The three-day trek around the boundary of Penhill Benefice was organised to mark its 20th anniversary.

Money raised will go to St George’s Crypt in Leeds, which provides care and support for homeless and vulnerable people and those affected by addiction.

The route was planned by Fiona Crossley, from Preston-under-Scar, with help from the Rev Scott Lunn, curate for the benefice.

Penhill Benefice includes churches at Castle Bolton, Preston-under-Scar, Redmire, Wensley, West Witton and Aysgarth, as well as the Mission Room at Thornton Rust.

Fiona said the idea came from her desire to explore the area and curiosity about the size of the benefice.

“Then I thought this looks like a walk can be organised,” she added.

The challenge took place from August 3 to 5.

On the first day, Fiona and Scott walked from Preston-under-Scar via Herontree Allotment and Whipperdale Bank to Woodhall and Ballowfield Bridge.

Despite rain and mist, the walkers enjoyed occasional views into Swaledale before conditions improved in Wensleydale.

They were joined near Woodhall by benefice vicar the Rev Tom Ringland, his wife Bev and their two dogs.

Day two involved another challenging stretch over rough terrain, taking in Thornton Rust Mission Room and Addlebrough before following a ridge towards Kidstones Pass.

For the final day, Fiona and Scott were joined by David Read, from Redmire, for a 19-mile walk.

Their route passed the Buckden Pike Memorial Cross, which commemorates Polish airmen who died there in January 1942, before continuing via Walden Head and the Height of Hazely to Penhill.

Scott said the ridge provided “stunning views of Wharfedale, Bishopdale, Coverdale, Walden, and Wensleydale”.

The walkers then headed to Wensley church before completing the challenge back at Preston-under-Scar.

Scott added: “What a great walk with great company!

“The next stage is to put together an album of the pictures taken over the three days and share them with others. Memory making.”
