80-year-old hiker still missing in Yorkshire Dales, police say

An 80-year-old hiker is still missing in the a Yorkshire Dales, despite a “vast” search to find him.

Sixty search and rescue volunteers and seven search dogs and their handlers, as well as police officers and the police helicopter, have been involved in the search for Harry Harvey.

Police say the search has covered a vast area of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, rom Tan Hill down towards Reeth and Gunnerside.

Police say remain in and the area tonight to respond to any new information received about Harry’s whereabouts, with the search set to resume on Tuesday.

Local Policing Inspector Mark Gee, said: “Despite the searches, we are sorry to say Mr Harvey is still missing.

“We have growing concerns for his safety and welfare and will continue to put all our efforts into further searches tomorrow.

“Officers are supporting the family during this worrying time, and I urge anyone who thinks they might have seen him to get in touch as a matter of urgency.

“Any information, no matter how small or irrelevant you think it is, could be key to finding Harry.

“I also again ask local residents and workers to check sheds, barns and other outbuildings.

“Please also keep an eye out for any discarded camping or walking equipment or clothing.”

Anyone who thinks they might have seen Harry or who has any information is asked to contact police.
