One lane of the A1 southboud is shut between Catterick Central and Leeming following a five-vehicle collision.

The emergency services are at the scene. Traffic is moving although drivers are facing delays of 30 minutes.

Highways England says it may be 1pm before the road is cleared.

The A1 has now reopened southbound between Junction 51 and 50 following last night’s breakdown.

The road was shut in both directions after a vehicle carrying an abnormal road broke down.

A 120-tonne crane had to be assembled at the scene to move the load to another vehicle.

The load was a 52-tonne bridge joint and required specialist recovery.
