The A66 trans-Pennine route has reopened westbound following a HGV fire this morning.

Fire crews from Colburn, Richmond and Darlington were called just before 5am to the incident near Scotch Corner.

The fire was in the cab of an articulated flatbed wagon carrying steel.

It resulted in severe damage to the cab and slight damage to the trailer unit.

Crews used four breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, triple extension ladder, thermal imaging camera and small tools.

The cause is believed to be a blown turbo.

The road was closed while emergency services worked at the scene and the vehicle was recovered.
