The A66 trans-Pennine route has reopened after being closed since Saturday night because of heavy snow.
Highways staff have battling since then to reopen the route.
Their job has been made harder by a number of accidents and drifting snow.
This story continues after the adverts:
The road was shut at the snot gates at Bowes and Brough.
Police said, however, that some motorist were attempting to still get on the route via minor access roads.
Final runs complete by snow ploughs + gritters #A66 both directions between #Brough and #Bowes following severe weather. The road is NOW OPEN both ways with minor congestion on the approach. Many thanks to @Cumbriapolice @DurhamPolice for their help in very difficult conditions. pic.twitter.com/jq391Ev7nv
