The A66 has been closed westbound after a serious accident.

The route is shut between Scotch Corner and Bowes.

The eastbound carriageway was also shut but since partially reopened.

It is understood the crash has occurred near Bowes.

Highways England says the closures have been prompted by a serious collision involving two cars.

A spokesperson said: “The A66 in County Durham is closed westbound between the A1(M) J53 at Scotch Corner and the A67 (Bowes) due to a serious collision involving two vehicles.

“Emergency services including Durham Constabulary are in attendance. National Highways Traffic officers are also assisting with traffic management on scene.”
