A66 to close tonight due to storm warning

The A66 is to close tonight ahead of the arrival of Storm Eunice.

The road will shut from Scotch Corner to Penrith at midnight.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: “In light of Storm Eunice we have taken the decision to close the A66 at midnight tonight between Scotch Corner and Penrith.

“The storm has high winds and snow forecast. This can lead to very difficult conditions over the tops particularly when it drifts.”

The government agency said they had ploughs and snow blowers ready.

“We will be working hard to keep the road clear and look to open again in the morning of 18th as soon as we can be sure it is safe to do so.

“This method allows us to get our kit though safely whilst protecting road users.”

A yellow warning for wind is in place for the whole of Richmondshire from 7am to 6pm tomorrow, with a yellow warning for snow also covering western parts of the district.

The snow warning is in place from 3am to 6pm tomorrow.
