The owner of an animal rescue centre in Richmond has been nominated for a prestigious award.

Gwen Butler, who runs Bunny Burrows Rescue Centre from her home, has reached the final of the Make A Difference Awards run by BBC Tees.

The awards honor local individuals and groups who have made a positive impact on their communities.

Gwen has worked tirelessly for almost 30 years to improve the lives of small animals, both through rescuing and education.

As well as rabbits and guinea pigs, Gwen currently cares for 19 tortoises.

She said it was an honour to be nominated.

“It’s nice to be recognised but I don’t do it for that.

“I just love what I do — it’s what makes me get up in the morning. I have great support and helpers who I’m very grateful for.”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Globe Theatre in Stockton in September.

In 2018, Gwen was presented with a British Empire Medal in recognition of her contributions to the community.
