Thieves caused damage to St Mary’s Church in Richmond last night while trying to steal lead.

The incident comes after a spate of similar incidents in Richmondshire in recent weeks.

Assistant curate Reverend Paul Sunderland said: “St Mary’s was hit by thieves last night.

“Someone has been on the roof and stolen lead.

“The damage is yet to be fully appraised, but it’s not insignificant.

“Thankfully there is very little lead on any of our church roofs, but it’s still upsetting to see damage to our beautiful building.”

Anyone with CCTV covering the area of the church is urged to check to see if they recorded anything unusual.

Anyone with information should call North Yorkshire Police on 101.
