Army veterans from the Green Howards and Royal Yorkshire Regiment will take to the pitch later this month to face Middlesbrough Over 40s in the Stan Hollis Memorial Cup.
The charity football match, taking place on Saturday, June 20, forms part of a wider family fun day organised in support of several good causes and to celebrate the military’s historic links with professional football.
The event has been arranged by the Green Howards Museum in Richmond in partnership with veteran Green Howard Paul Cutler and Royal Yorkshire Regiment representative Darren Clarke.
It also supports the museum’s current Battle Bowlers and Football Boots exhibition, which explores the Green Howards Regiment’s long-standing connection with the professional game.
The match will be hosted by the Dorman Club in Middlesbrough, with kick-off scheduled for 10.30am.
Alongside the football action, visitors will be able to enjoy a packed programme of entertainment and activities throughout the day. Attractions include stalls, bouncy castles, an ice cream van, live music, karaoke, a comedian, raffles and military displays.
Representatives from the Green Howards Museum and the Royal Yorkshire Regiment will also be on hand with displays showcasing the regiment’s history, equipment and heritage.
Organisers hope the event will attract football supporters, military families and local residents while raising money for a number of charities. Beneficiaries include the Green Howards Museum, the Royal Yorkshire Regiment Charitable Trust and Middlesbrough Over 40s’ chosen charity, Unique, which supports people affected by rare chromosome disorders.
The Stan Hollis Memorial Cup is named in honour of Company Sergeant Major Stan Hollis, the only soldier awarded the Victoria Cross on D-Day.
Organisers say the event aims to celebrate community spirit, military heritage and grassroots football while providing a fun day out for families.
The event runs from 10am until 6pm at the Dorman Club on Oxford Road, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough. Entry is free, with all proceeds from fundraising activities going to charity.
