A coffee morning on Saturday organised by members of St Oswald’s Church in Askrigg raised £275 towards the fund for repairing the church tower.

It was part of a programme of events to be held throughout the spring and summer to help foot the massive £200,000 bill for damp-proofing the tower of the 17th Century church, and already nearly £35,000 has been raised.

Events include a flower festival in the church from Sunday 12, to Saturday 18 April, an auction of paintings on Saturday 18, a soup lunch on Thursday, 23, and a folk concert with Marie Little on Saturday 25, for which tickets – available from Sykes’ House – are selling fast.

Although grants have been applied for, there is no central pot of money for individual churches from the Church of England or the government, so all fundraising has to be done locally.
