Barclays confirms Hawes branch closure

Barclays Bank in Hawes before its closure.

Barclays plans to shut its Hawes branch, the company has confirmed.

The branch has been earmarked for closure along with several other market town banks in North Yorkshire, including Grassington, Pately Bridge, Knaresborough and Boroughbridge.

The closure was confirmed on Thursday morning.

Upper Dales county councillor John Blavkie said it was a sad day for the town.

He said the premises had been a bank for more than 150 years, and were previously called the Wensleydale and Swaledale Bank.

The town’s HSBC branch closed in 2016.

Cllr Blackie said: “It’s a very sad for the town.

“I thank our lucky stars we managed to hold on to the Post office and we will do our very best to accommodate Barclays customers.”

The councillor said he would be pushing for the bank to keep the cash machine.

“If it was to go we would only have one left in Hawes which is not enough. A lot of people still use cash.”

Cllr Blackie said the closure would also cause problems for businesses who needed change.

He said the Post Office was hoping to be able to keep more change in the future to alleviate the problem.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “The way customers undertake their banking is changing as people increasingly use online, telephone and mobile devices.

“At Barclays Hawes branch customer usage has continued to decline and 68 per cent of our customers now regularly use online and telephone banking, which is why we have taken the difficult decision to close it.

“We hope that the availability of our other Barclays branches at Kirkby Stephen and Leyburn and access to services at the local Post Office located at Market Place, Hawes, along with our range of digital channels will help to ease the transition for our customers.”

Barclays added that it had no plans to close either Leyburn or Richmond branches.

However, the spokesperson added: “We constantly review how customers prefer to undertake their banking.”

  1. It would be interesting to know how many Customers transferred their accounts to Barclays following the closure of HSBC in 2016. Particularly following their assurance that Barclays Hawes would not close.
I now read that they have assured customers that the Leyburn branch will not close. Then in the next breath say;”we constantly review how customers prefer to undertake their banking”
