Beer rail traffic subject of Wensleydale Railway talk

Dr David Turner will be joining the Wensleydale Railway on November 10 at 7pm to give a free online talk exploring the development of beer traffic by rail between 1830 and 1914.

David will discuss how the railways enabled breweries, especially those in Burton-upon-Trent to expand the range of their distribution networks and grow their businesses.

David will then discuss the animosity that brewers developed towards the railways by the end of the 19th century due of high rates and the alleged poor quality of service.

Finally, David will describe how brewers adopted motor lorries prior to the First World War as a means to reduce costs, increase the flexibility of their delivery operations and ultimately break free of the railways.

This is a free online talk that has been made possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the Leeming Bar Station House project.
