Black Bull in Moulton sold to Middleton Lodge Estate owner

James Allison, owner and managing director of Middleton Lodge Estate, at The Black Bull.

The Black Bull pub in Moulton has been purchased by James Allison, owner and managing director of Middleton Lodge Estate.

The pub has been acquired from the Provenance Group and is located a five-minute drive from the 200-acre Middleton Lodge Estate near Middleton Tyas.

The purchase represents an expansion of the estate’s hospitality portfolio into the pub sector.

The acquisition is described as a natural progression for the business, given the pub’s close proximity to the estate and its long-established role within the local community.

The pub will close temporarily while a programme of refurbishment is carried out.

Plans include refreshed interiors and a food and drink offering centred on classic Yorkshire pub dishes made with regional produce, served in a relaxed and informal setting.

James said: “The Black Bull feels like a natural fit for us. Its proximity to the estate makes this a logical next step and allows us to extend the hospitality we’re known for into a more informal, community-led setting.

“It’s a pub with a huge amount of history and one that is clearly loved, which made the decision feel right. Our focus is on thoughtful growth and building hospitality businesses that are sustainable for the long term, shaped by the people who work in them and the guests who visit, and that celebrate Yorkshire in a meaningful way.”

The origins of The Black Bull date back to at least the 16th century, when it operated as a village inn. In 1963, Audrey and George Pagendam transformed the then one-room pub into one of the region’s early food-led destinations. The pub went on to feature in the Good Food Guide for 38 consecutive years.

Anthony Blundell, commercial director at the Provenance Collection, said: “The Black Bull has been an important part of Moulton for many years, and we are proud of the investment and care that went into restoring the pub during our time as custodians.

“After being approached by James Allison, we are pleased to be passing it on to Middleton Lodge Estate, whose approach to hospitality and long-term stewardship makes them a fitting owner for the next chapter of The Black Bull’s story.

“We are also pleased that the existing team will remain in place, ensuring continuity for both staff and the local community.”

Further details, including reopening dates, will be announced in due course.
