Body found in search for missing Wensleydale pensioner

Police say a body has been found by teams searching for missing Askrigg man Howard Gibbs.

A major search was launched to find the man in his 70s who went missing yesterday.

A police spokesperson said: “Sadly, earlier today, the body of a man was found near Mill Gill near Askrigg by Mountain Rescue Volunteers who were assisting officers with the search.

“Although formal identification has yet to take place, we believe the man to be missing Howard.

“His family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time.

“Officers believe there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

“Thank you to everyone who shared our appeal.”

Members of Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team and the search and rescue helicopter joined police and dozens of local residents searching for Mr Gibbs.

It was thought he may have set off to work to Hawes.
