Bomb squad called out to Richmond trading estate

Businesses were evacuated after a suspected unexploded bomb was discovered in Richmond today.

Workers on parts of the Gallowfields Trading Estate were told to leave their premises.

It is understood the device was found in a unit off Fairfield Way.

Police attended scene and the bomb squad were called from Catterick, however the cordon has now been lifted.

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said: “We were called shortly after 1pm today to reports that a suspicious item had been discovered on the Gallowfields Trading Estate.

“A 100-metre exclusion zone was put in place and local businesses were evacuated as a precaution.

“The explosive ordnance disposal were called to assist.”

Nitin Bajaj, from the Estate Cafe, said: “There are five police cars blocking off the road. They’ve been here for some time now.”
