Catterick Boxing Club now has a double national champion and a member of England Boxing’s talent programme.

Sophia Maycroft became a two time national champion at the weekend, after success at the National Development Youth Championships in October was followed by triumph at the National Youth Cadet Championships.

The teenager lives in Darlington and trains at the Colburn-based club four times a week.

Sophia took the title after beating skilled Manchester boxer Shannon Batley-Frazier.

The Catterick-based boxer went in as the underdog with less bouts boxed. The Manchester boxer had more wins than Sophia had bouts.

A cagey first round saw Sophia needing to win the next two. Biting down on her gum shield she took the fight to Shannon and constant pressure seen her dominate both rounds and win gold.

The good news didn’t stop there with Catterick Boxing Club receiving an email the following day to say Sophia had been assessed and had been selected to attend England Boxing’s talent programme.

Club owner Justin Barnes said: “All at the club are massively proud and trainer Lee Bannister said if anyone deserves this then it is Sophia as she works hard and sets her bar high.

“To have a national champion within the first year of the club is outstanding, but to be selected for England is unreal for the rest of the club members who fully back her and are keen to follow her footsteps.”
