Police have confirmed that a child’s body was recovered from the river at Richmond Falls late last night.
Emergency services searching the water made the discovery at around 10.45pm.
The body is yet to be formally identified but the boy’s family have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.
A police spokesperson said the death is not being treated as suspicious.
Emergency services remain at the scene and no further details have yet been released.
A search was launched at about 5pm after reports that a 12-year-old boy had entered the water and had not reemerged.
Police, firefighters and members of the Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team were deployed to search the river.
A police helicopter was also sent to the scene.
A spokesperson for Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team said: “We assisted other emergency services in the search for a missing person at Richmond Falls.
“Sadly, at about 10.30pm a body was found.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this sad time.”
