BREAKING: Unmarked police car on driving training involved in Catterick Village crash

A police car on a driver training exercise was one of two vehicles involved in a serious collision near Catterick Village yesterday.

Two people had to be cut free from the wreckage of the Skoda after it collided with a Vauxhall Astra on the A6055 near Catterick Village.

Cleveland Police has confirmed the unmarked Skoda was one of its vehicles and was taking part in a driver training exercise at the time of the crash.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: “We can confirm that an unmarked Cleveland Police vehicle which was part of a driver training exercise was involved in a collision yesterday, Thursday, December 8, in the Catterick Garrison area of North Yorkshire.

“As with all incidents of this nature, a mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).”

The emergency services were called to the scene on the A6055 at the junction with Catterick Lane and Leeming Lane.around 11.20am on Thursday.

Police, firefighters from Richmond and Northallerton, ambulance crews and a Great North Air Ambulance attended the incident.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews used cutting gear to extricate the driver and passenger of a Skoda, who were then taken to hospital via road ambulance.

“The third passenger of the Skoda and the driver of the Vauxhall Astra were all treated for precautionary checks by the ambulance service.”

The road was closed for several hours while emergency services worked at the scene.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed it was called to A6055 near Catterick at around 11.15am yesterday.

A spokesperson added: “Two people, one from each car, were taken to hospital for treatment to injuries sustained in the collision.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or the events surrounding it is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting reference NYP-08122022-0169.”
