Jumping action returns to Catterick Racecourse on Wednesday afternoon with a seven-race card, consisting of three races over fences, three over hurdles and one on the flat; a junior bumper.
Read on for a full preview of and tips for the Catterick card, brought to you by Betway.
First up is a conditional jockeys’ veterans’ handicap run over three miles and a furlong (12.47). We have six runners here, of which two have won a race already this term; Ladronne, who won at Sedgefield in November, and Fern Hill, who won back-to-back races at Uttoxeter and Huntingdon in the Autumn. They both look to have a chance of repeating the form, but consistent others make more appeal. Tiger Orchid should be competitive, but Gold Emery looks to have a good winning opportunity at the weights here, given three pounds by Charlie Maggs.
Next is a two and a half mile novices’ hurdle (1.17). Alsakib, Cool Master and Inlet are the least exposed, with just one hurdle run each, while Red Oak, Noonetellsmenothin and Kosac d’Oudairies are all winners over the obstacles already. Alsakib should generate plenty of interest, having been a Group level winner on the Flat before placing on his hurdle debut. He can operate on soft, but will benefit from dryer conditions here and can win for Donald McCain today.
A novices’ handicap chase follows, run over two miles and three furlongs (1.47). Three of the seven contenders won their latest starts; Marty McFly, Powerofjet and Huit Reflets, but given their resulting rises in the handicap, others are more appealing. Another for Donald McCain, Count Adhemar, steps up in trip for the first time and is bred to appreciate the extra distance, so he looks the likely winner here.
Race four is a two and half mile handicap hurdle (2.20). This could turn out to be one of the more competitive races on the card, with a pleasing amount of good quality recent form on show. Thank You Blue is on an attractive mark now, and may be able to at least place, as could Les’s Legacy, who would be helped by dying out ground. Sun Lady Marine is down in class and up in trip with a claiming rider on board, so could improve significantly on her incomplete UK debut and has at least an each-way chance on her best form.
The fifth race is a handicap chase run over three miles and a furlong (2.50). Valence d’Aumont and Wolfburg won their latest starts, but both look hard pressed to win again. Alltalknoaction could be capable on his current mark with a five-pound claimer taking the ride, while Defence Witness also has a good chance, sitting on his latest winning mark. Mersey Street is interesting here and should be in the mix, but is the sort who finds it hard to win.
Our penultimate race is a two-mile handicap hurdle (3.20). Stellarmasterpiece is a reliable, dual-purpose type who makes plenty of appeal here, down three pounds from last time and with seven pounds from her rider. Vampire Slayer should have a chance in the first-time visor, while Romancier could run a better race from this mark and has an each-way chance.
Finally, racing concludes with a junior bumper (3.50). Improvement could be expected from Cribbins, who ran green last time and might benefit from the better ground here. He is one of few with previous racecourse experience, which may stand him in good stead. Teddie may go better than the market expects, and Broadway Dreamer could be the best on pedigree suitability for this.
