Kicking off the action is a seven-furlong apprentice handicap (2.20). Langholm outran double figure odds last time out at Thirsk to finish a good third of nine, and having not been moved in the handicap, he could run an even better race from stall two today. Rain Cap also looks capable of going well, but has a wide draw to overcome, while Ideal Guest is of interest in first time cheekpieces running off the same mark as when a close fourth of nine last time at Pontefract.

The two-year-olds are up next in a five-furlong nursery handicap (2.50). Karl Burke’s filly Dinamo is equipped with a visor for the first time, having disappointed last time out at York, and could improve for the headgear. Coul Jane steps back down in trip for this, having been over six furlongs last time out, and should be capable of better at the minimum distance.

Staying with the two-year-olds, race three is a restricted fillies’ maiden over five furlongs (3.20). Two newcomers are introduced here; the Middleham Park-owned pair of She’s Crafty and Magnificent Mel, the latter of which is the best on paper. Amo Racing’s Stardinia was well fancied when beaten at Newbury last time over a furlong further, and ought to be better over this trip, but Kunaa – a half-sister of Haatem – is the one she needs to get past.

Next is a seven-furlong handicap for three-year-olds (3.50), which looks a competitive affair. Medinilla is our top weight here, travelling a fair way to Catterick – which was recently revealed to have one of three cheapest on-track pints available in the country according to the Racing Postfrom Jack Channon’s yard near Newbury, and looks able to run a very good race, especially considering her trainer has a 63% strike rate at this track. Invincible Ruby has some good course form from the spring and, remaining on the same mark as when placing second of eight at Ayr. Given five pounds by regular rider Mohammed Tabti, she has a good chance here.

The penultimate race is a two-mile handicap (4.20). Cosmic Soul has kept up an impressive level of consistency this year, with three close seconds and – wearing a visor for the first time here – could have his day under Jason Hart. He is top weight, though, which leaves Mark Loughnane’s Star Of Jupiter looking tempting after a very good run at Chepstow when first upped in trip last time out, only beaten three quarters of a length.

Our finale is a seven-furlong fillies’ handicap (4.50). Four of the nine runners won their last races; Coconut Bay, In A Hurry, Left Over Love and Crown’s Lad. Making her handicap debut having never finished behind second in three starts so far, Left Over Love appears to be the best of them and has been given a break to freshen up ahead of today.
