Racing returns to Catterick Racecourse on Tuesday afternoon with a seven-race Flat card, featuring six handicap races and a maiden.

First up is an amateur jockeys’ handicap run over a mile and three quarters (2.10). Micky Hammond’s Stellarmasterpiece is a consistent type who rarely runs a bad race and hasn’t been too heavily penalised for her last winning start over two furlongs fewer. She should be a contender here, but Twoforthegutter should be worth some attention here too after a win last time out and some very promising form over this distance from.
Race two is a five-furlong handicap (2.40). Betweenthesticks will be in with a big chance today having won or placed in each of his last three starts, including over course and distance, and can keep up that level of form from today’s mark. Birkenhead has a similar level of form and looks better off in the weights here, so could be a danger for Paul Midgley. Connections of Desert Champion will be hoping that his equipping with first-time cheekpieces can help improve his recent poor form.
Next is a nursery handicap over six furlongs (3.10). Hugo Palmer’s Looks Likely could be just that for this race, wearing cheekpieces for the first time under the in-form Jason Hart. This filly produced a career best last time on handicap debut and should have few excuses not to go well here on the same mark. Maasai Mata should be involved, and Preminision should have come down to a workable mark now too,
The fourth race is a six-furlong maiden for those ages three to five years old (3.40). We have only four runners here, of which the best appears to be Richard Hannon’s Gennadius, who travels a long way to run here today. This colt is a maiden from 10 starts, but has placed on seven of these occasions. With fewer opponents here, he might finally graduate out of maiden company this time.
A six-furlong handicap follows (4.10). Seb Spencer’s Crocodile Power has hit a strain of good form lately, but appears to prefer the ground softer than it is today. Liam Bailey’s Pit Boss may have come down to a winnable mark now after a reasonable start for his new yard. From stall two he could have all the conditions he needs to win now.
Second to last is a seven-furlong three-year-olds’ handicap (4.40). Our Nicola could have a good chance here under Joanna Mason, having dipped a little further down in the handicap from a good start at Musselburgh last time. Likewise, Ey Up He’s A Star has a very good chance of winning this, now on a new low mark after some good races over this trip earlier in the season. With the good ground he likes, he could be the winner today.
Finally, the afternoon concludes with a seven-furlong handicap (5.10). Lizzie Quinlan’s One More Bottle ought to attract plenty of attention today after three good recent runs, including a place last time over course and distance. With five pounds from his rider, he could win this. Back Before Dark might also be worth a look, stepping up in trip for the first time having been absent from the winners’ enclosure since 2023.
