A touch rugby team scored a notable success when they applied to a housing association for a community grant.
The £500 they secured from Broadacres’ community development fund has provided playing kit for Catterick Touch Rugby, enabling them to play in local tournaments.
Touch Rugby is a fast-growing sport open to anyone over 14 which allows mums, dads, brothers and sisters to all take part together. There’s no tackling, instead when you are tagged you have to release the ball.
“It’s a social sport, very much about fun and participation and open to all. Because it is six aside you get a lot more touches of the ball than in normal rugby,” said club treasurer David Carter.
“It is such low impact you can take part without fearing an injury might mean taking time off work, or having to find childcare. We have also had former rugby players who have had to give up the sport because of injury come and join us.”
“We are grateful to Broadacres for the grant because it means whatever someone’s financial situation they will have the same kit as every other player and the team can take part in local tournaments,” added Mr Carter.
The Broadacres Community Development Fund supports local organisations, groups, and projects in areas where Broadacres has homes.
All grants are approved by the association’s own residents.
The club trains on Richmond School 3G pitch every week and have matches and tournaments against other local clubs.
They currently have over 20 members aged 17-55 and welcome anyone wishing to give it a try.

Broadacres resident Mags Crook, who is on the Panel, said: “We thought this application was deserving of approval because not only does it promote physical, outdoor exercise, it’s also something the whole family can do together.”
