Charity rugby match planned to remember former Wensleydale players

A charity rugby match will take place later this month to remember two former Wensleydale RUFC players.

The game at Wensleydale’s Cawkhill Park at 7.30pm on August 25 will remember James Ashcroft and Charley Purkiss-McEndoo, who both died tragically in separate incidents in 2019.

The game will feature Wensleydale against and an invitational 15 billed as the C&J Allstars, which is made up of players who played both James and Charley.

The event will raise money for Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Mind UK.

All welcome.

The bar will be open until late with food served.

Almost £5,000 was raised at a charity match held last year and organisers are hoping this event will be just as successful.

John Estensen, who played rugby at junior level with James, said: “With the enormous success of last year in raising money and celebrating the lives of our two dear friends, we want to continue in this spirit with another evening of rugby.

“There will be food available and the bar open, so please join us in remembering both Charley and James whilst raising money for two hugely worthwhile charities.”
