Charity urges runners to consider Great North Run charity place

Herriot Hospice Homecare is urging those who missed out in the ballot for a place in the Great North Run to consider signing up for a charity place.

Last year, charity-place runners raised almost £4,000 for Herriot Hospice Homecare, which supports local families living with terminal illness and bereavement across Hambleton and Richmondshire.

The Great North Run takes place on Sunday, September 8 and starts in Newcastle upon Tyne before finishing in South Shields.

It’s dubbed as the world’s most iconic half marathon, and the 13.1-mile route attracts tens of thousands of runners from all over the world each year.

Maureen Worley took part in the event in 2022 to raise funds for Herriot Hospice@The Lambert, the new hospice being built in the former Lambert Memorial Hospital building in Thirsk.

She said: “The moment I stepped on the train, the energy was electric from all the fellow competitors. Right from the start people are encouraging you – all you can hear is clapping, shouting and singing.

“All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other.

“It is the most amazing thing I have ever done, and you are spurred on because you are doing it for such a good cause.

“If I can do it at 71, you can.”

Herriot Hospice Homecare has a limited number of places available priced at £35, with a minimum sponsorship target of £300.

As part of Team Orange, all runners receive a fundraising pack and branded technical t-shirt or running vest, and they are encouraged to visit the charity’s marquee in the Charity Village to rest and re-fuel after crossing the finish line.

Jess Williams, community and events fundraiser at Herriot Hospice Homecare, said: “With the ballot results being announced this week, we’re expected our places to go fast.

“Sign up today to join our wonderful team of runners and help raise vital funds for hospice care with every step you take.”
