Cheer athletes selected to compete for Team England

Seven athletes from Lazer Cheer Academy in Colburn have been selected to compete for Team England at the ICU World Championships.

Members of the academy travelled to London to attend trials for the national team last month.

They spent the weekend battling against nearly 200 other athletes to try to secure a place on the team.

Head coach and director Chelsea Foreman said: “It was a really tough weekend both physically and mentally going up against the best Cheerleaders in the country. but our girls gave it everything they had, and we are so proud of them all.

“We are absolutely delighted to announce that we have seven athletes from Lazer Cheer that will represent Team England at the ICU World Championships in April 2024.

“This is the highest achievement in any athlete’s cheerleading career to be able to represent their country at this most prestigious event.

“Our athletes are all home grown and have trained with us since they were little, so it’s amazing to see their hard work and commitment pay off. They live and breathe our sport and are excellent role models for our younger athletes who have the same dreams to one day be part of Team England.”

The competition takes place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Florida.

The event is typically spread out over three days, starting with the youth and junior world championships, then semi-finals, and then finals for senior aged teams.

The competition is open for all ICU member nations and offers divisions in different levels and age groups, for both all-girl and coed teams and also adaptive abilities.

An Olympic-style opening ceremony is held on the first day, as well as a closing ceremony on the last day.
