Local youngsters are being given the opportunity to take part in one of the region’s best-loved pantomimes and to tread the boards of the UK’s oldest working theatre in its original form.

Richmond’s Georgian Theatre Royal is holding open auditions on Tuesday 20 June for boys and girls aged between eight and 18-years-old to join the junior chorus of this year’s production of The Wizard of Oz.

The Georgian’s reputation for innovative festive productions has earned it a name for excellence that extends far beyond the local area. Only a couple of years ago it was cited as the UK’s number one venue to see a pantomime by The Telegraph and last year it featured on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show.

Part of its appeal is the star-quality of the cast which is supported by a young company drawn from the local community.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for young people to get involved in a professional production and appear alongside experienced actors and musicians,” said Theatre Chief Executive and pantomime director, Clare Allen.

“The junior chorus takes on a major role within the show, primarily through lively song and dance routines, and is an important part of the action.”

“For many of the young company it is their first taste of ‘acting’ but it is rarely their last. No experience is necessary and everyone is invited to come along and have a go,” she added.

The auditions will take place at the Theatre from 5pm until 7pm on Tuesday 20 June, with registration from 4.30pm.

The session will run as a fun workshop where participants will do some singing, dancing and acting. Individuals are encouraged to bring their own dance shoes if they have them but these are not necessary.

Parents and carers will be asked to leave their children for the duration of the audition where they will be looked after by registered chaperones.

Those successful in the open auditions will be divided into one of three chorus teams which will perform every third day throughout the duration of the pantomime. Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings from 5pm to 7pm from September with additional rehearsals leading up to the show.

The Wizard of Oz will run at The Georgian Theatre Royal between 7 December 2017 and 8 January 2018.
