Classic and retro vehicles to be on display at car show

Classic and retro car enthusiasts are gearing up for a popular car show this summer.

The fourth annual Barnard Castle Classic and Retro Car Meet returns to the town on Sunday, June 23, from 9am, in the grounds of Barnard Castle School.

Established in 2021 by automotive enthusiasts and friends Alan Beaty, Jonathan Wallis, Colin Graham and Jonathan Privett, the family-friendly event welcomes hundreds of people each year, raising vital funds for various local charities in the process.

Over the years, popularity of the show has increased to the point where organisers have increased static display spaces to 170, with the potential for more around the school’s site should demand continue to rise.

It is open to all pre-millennium vehicles, from cars to tractors, and features a static display and a ride out for interested vehicle owners around the dale and local attractions.

The event is free for all visitors and spectators, with a small cost of £5 for entry per show vehicle, which will be shared among the event’s chosen charities: Teesdale Cancer Research, Barnard Castle Christmas Lights, as well as other local causes. There will also be catering available on-site over the course of the day, with the Barnard Castle Band entertaining guests.

Mr Beaty, organiser and head of design technology at Barnard Castle School, said: “The show has continued to grow in popularity and has become a firm favourite with locals and visitors to Teesdale alike.

“The relaxed, welcoming nature of the event has definitely fuelled the increased demand we have enjoyed year-on-year, together with its uniqueness, whereby visitors can gain entry for free and then wander into Barnard Castle afterwards.”

Typically, the Meet is staged in August, but this year’s event has been brought forward to coincide with Barnard Castle School’s Old Barnardian Summer Gathering – an annual celebration of its alumni network.

Mr Beaty added: “This year’s event perfectly coincides with Barnard Castle School’s alumni celebration, which will hopefully encourage even more visitors and vehicles on display as they will already be in town visiting their old school.

“We are excited to welcome people far and wide to enjoy what promises to be a wonderful day in picturesque surroundings, while raising money for worthwhile causes.”
