Colburn man given suspended sentence for assaulting woman

York Magistrates' Court.

A Colburn man has avoided a custodial sentence for twice assaulting a woman.

Kevin Slater, 35, of Fifth Avenue, Colburn, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault and one of damaging a TV belonging to his victim.

The incidents occurred on three occasions in June and July last year at an address in York.

Slater appeared in York Magistrates’ Court yesterday for sentencing after admitting the offences at an earlier hearing.

He was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for 18 months.

He was ordered to pay costs, a victim surcharge and compensation totaling £1,039.

The defendant must also attended a rehabilitation programme entitled Building Better Relationships.

A restraining order was also issued preventing Slater from contacting his victim.

The court was told the defendant was given a prison sentence because stamping was involved in the assaults and a child was present during the incidents.

The defendant’s guilty pleas were taken into account when the sentence was imposed.
