Community football match raises thousands in memory of former player

A charity football match in Leyburn raised more than £4,000 for a memorial bench in memory of former youth player James Thompson.

The match on Saturday was held at The Wensleydale School between Leyburn United FC men’s team and a team from Wensleydale RUFC.

A crowd of more than 200 people watched the game, which was played in great spirit with the football team winning 7-4.

A raffle was then held at the Bolton Arms afterwards, which raised £4,165.

A further generous donation was made by Metcalfe Farms.

Funds were raised to pay for a memorial bench to be placed at The Wensleydale School in memory of James, 19, who tragically died in a road traffic collision in September.

Any money left over will be split between local good causes.

Organiser Shane Close, Leyburn Utd FC, thanked the numerous volunteers and local businesses who supported the day with donations of time and raffle prizes.

“Seeing the community pull together to support and spectate was incredible,” he added.
