Community launches appeal to buy village pub

A Richmondshire community has launched a campaign to buy the village pub.

Residents of Hunton are hoping to take over the Countryman’s Inn.

Countryman’s Community Pub Society Ltd has been formed and a share offer was launched yesterday

Share purchase applications totalling more than £100,000 have already been submitted with a target of raising £230,000 by December 20.

The residents behind the campaign say the vision is to secure pub “as a thriving community owned enterprise serving the village and the community both as a pub and a broader community asset in perpetuity”.

“We then intend to operate the pub through a tenancy model.

“We hope to engage a tenant to run the pub as a sustainable and growing business, serving a full range of quality brewed beers from local breweries such as Wensleydale Brewery and Pennine Brewing Co. plus wines and spirits.

“We will seek to appoint a tenant who is able to serve quality, locally sourced food from the pub kitchen.

“The Countryman’s Inn will continue to serve as a social hub for the village and as a meeting place where all are welcome.”

Communities in Hudswell and Gunnerside have already take over the ownership of their village pubs, with residents of Skeeby hoping to take over theirs too.
