A new campaign to encourage visitors to Richmondshire has been launched.

The district council is undertaking the marketing initiative under the banner ‘Visit Richmondshire Safely – protect, respect and enjoy’.

There will be social media messages and a new film to promote the district as a place to visit.

However, people are being asked to show respect to local communities when they visit.

There have been a problems of anti-social since the start of lockdown, with large crowds gathering at the Falls in Richmond to drink and take drugs and issues of wild camping in the Dales.

Messages include social distancing, parking, queuing safely and washing hands – as well as taking litter home and picking up after pets.

“We are seeing a huge rise in the number of visitors coming into the district but we need them to remember that coronavirus hasn’t gone away and to think of the people who live here,” said council leader, Councillor Angie Dale.

“Our campaign is to respect and protect our district – and of course enjoy it too.  We are embarking on a promotional campaign to cover the entire area, it is an exciting new project for the council and one which will run well into the next 12 months.”

From this weekend a promotional advertising vehicle will be touring the district, taking in key locations with its display of digital messages.

Radio adverts will begin playing on stations covering North Yorkshire, Teesside, Northumberland and West, East and South Yorkshire.

They will feature for two weeks on the airwaves of Heart, Smooth, Minster and Stray.

New banners are being installed on the district council’s fleet of bin trucks to drive home the safety message.

Posters are going up across the district in key locations, with the help of local parishes, community groups and businesses.

The promotional truck will be parked in Richmond over the bank holiday to add to the message to visit Richmond Falls safely.

  1. Any new ideas to improve parking facilities for these new visitors? How about a park and ride for example. The town just doesn’t have enough spaces for a lot of visitors.
