Covid-19 vaccination hub to be created in Leyburn

A hub for vaccinating vulnerable people with the Covid-19 vaccine is to be created in Leyburn.

Vaccinations for Covid-19 for those in Richmondshire who are on the NHS priority list should start at Tennants in Leyburn on Monday, Dr Mike Brookes told the Upper Dales Area Partnership virtual meeting today.

Dr Brookes, from the Reeth Medical Centre, emphasised that people should wait for a phone call from their own GP practice.

He explained that as so much was being done by telephone that lines could quickly become overloaded.

He said patients would be prioritised according to NHS guidelines and those eligible would be contacted by their GP practice in order to arrange an appointment.

As no additional staff was available and those at the GP practices were already ‘maxxed out’ he said the Richmondshire practices will provide the staff on a rota basis.

“It’s going to be quite a challenge to administer the vaccine,” he added. He explained this was because the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine has to be stored at minus 70 degrees C and will arrive in batches of about 1,000 with a short shelf life.”

He expected an upsurge in the vaccination programme once the Astrazeneca vaccine was approved as that could be stored at GP practices.

Dr Brookes also emphasised that those over 50 should have the flu vaccine as this would help to reduce the pressure on the NHS and hospitals.
