Dales distillers announce new rum

A Leyburn-based distillery announced the launch of a new spiced rum.

The Wensleydale Spirit Company, which already makes the Taplin & Mageean craft gin range, has launched Wensleydale Spiced Rum.

The company said the base of the rum was fermented molasses.

Once fermented, Wensleydale Spiced Rum is double distilled in alembic copper stills, where a combination of honey, cocoa, vanilla, mandarin zest, fresh ginger, black pepper, and cardamom are added.

Chris Taplin, co-owner and founder of Wensleydale Spirit Company, said: “Wensleydale Spiced Rum is a premium rum which resides alongside other world-famous brands from Wensleydale and North Yorkshire.

“Premium rums are all about quality and provenance.

“Our passion and attention to detail has led to the creation of a luxurious spiced rum that by using a combination of cocoa and other botanicals is a nod towards leading family brands that have been making confectionary in the North Yorkshire area for centuries.”

Chris Young, co-owner of the Wensleydale Spirit Company said: “Yorkshire is our passion, and our growing spirit range is renowned for its quality and our meticulous attention to detail.

“We have won numerous awards, and continue to develop new drinks that are crafted in and reflect the sense of the Yorkshire Dales.

“Our Wensleydale Spiced Rum branding includes the phrase ‘A Right Rum Do’.

“The modern day meaning of ‘rum’ in this phrase is an adjective meaning ‘odd’ or ‘strange’.

“However in the 16th century when the term was coined it meant ‘excellent’ or ‘great’, which we feel describes our rum and our full spirit range perfectly.”
