Farmer Jack Shepherd took off his trousers and came to the rescue of a stranded motorist in his pants.

The elderly Audi driver and his wife got stuck in flooding this morning on the A684 near Aysgarth, in Wensleydale.

After jumping into the flood waters from his Fastrac, Jack initially tried to fasten a rope and pull the vehicle out but ended pushing the stricken pair to safety.

The vehicle was understood to be a hire car.

Heavy rain overnight meant the A684 was blocked to motorists this morning.

The Met Office said 37mm of rain fell in Wensleydale overnight causing the River Ure to flood in several places.

If you are travelling to Wensleydale and the A684 is blocked because of flooding at Wensley or Aysgarth, you can usually get up and down the Dale using the road on the northern side of the Dale via Redmire and Carperby.
