A Dales road is to shut for two weeks for maintenance work.

Long Gill West Bridge in Widdale sits on the B6255 between Hawes and Ribblehead, serving the people of Hawes, Ingleton and the surrounding area.

North Yorkshire County Council’s bridges team started repairs to the bridge on Monday, November 14, under two-way traffic lights.

From Monday, December 5, officials say a full road closure will be in place for two weeks to allow for the final stages to be completed.

The county council’s executive member for highways and transport, Cllr Keane Duncan, said: “This is another example of our commitment to ensuring the county’s vast roads network remains in the best condition possible.

“The importance of carrying out schemes such as this are very significant, as it ensures that communities in rural parts of North Yorkshire continue to have good quality roads, while also helping provide access for visitors.”

A recent routine inspection found damage to the arch and parapets on the bridge which need to be repaired to prevent further deterioration.

The works will include rebuilding the parapet walls and adding a concrete saddle to strengthen the arch. The mortar used will match in colour and texture to the existing structure.

Cllr Yvonne Peacock, who represents the Upper Dales division on the county council, said: “The safety of the travelling public is a priority for the council and these repairs are essential to retain the integrity of the bridge and make sure it can withstand future traffic demands.

“Due to the nature of the works a full road closure is necessary, so I urge road users to familiarise themselves with the diversion before starting their journey.”

Advance warning signs will be installed ahead of the work to repair Long Gill West Bridge and a signed diversion will be in place from the first day of the closure.
