A rural community is revving up for its biggest ever charity tractor run after being inspired by a brave little boy.

Up to 60 farmers from across the Yorkshire Dales will be gathering for the 30-mile fundraising tour of Swaledale on Sunday, May 25.

They are driving for Duchenne UK, a charity supporting sufferers of muscular dystrophy, and the convoy will include three-year-old Zander Coates, of Keld, Swaledale, who was diagnosed with the genetic condition as a baby.

Zander’s mum Rebecca Coates has been touched by the support from the community.

She said: “I would like to thank everyone for their love and, of course, for their donations. Let’s hope the money goes towards finding a cure for Zander and other little boys.”

The convoy will be leaving Keld at 10am and its route will include the Tan Hill Inn, and the CB Inn in Arkengarthdale, before heading into Swaledale, through Low Row and Ivelet before taking an off-road route back towards Keld.

Rebecca, who runs a farm with her husband Steven, thanked tractor run organisers Chris and Glenda Calvert, of Keld, for their efforts.

Chris, a semi-retired farmer, has organised and led charity tractor runs since 2011 when he drove coast-to-coast on his vintage Ferguson 20.

The petrol-driven 1948 model was bought by his grandad in 1951 from a garage on Reeth.

Wife Glenda runs the raffle for the event, and 50 prizes will be drawn at the lunch stop on the run.

Entrants for tractors on the event are now closed, but anyone wanting to contribute to the cause can do so here.
