Dance-a-thon fundraiser planned for hospice which helped Bedale woman

Steph Exley completes a fundraising marathon.

A charity dance-a-thon will take place at the Garden Rooms at Tennants next month.

Proceeds from the family fun event, on February 1, will go to St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds.

Organiser Steph Exley, 38, from Leyburn, is raising money for the hospice after sister-in-law Gina Exley lost her long battle with cancer in September last year.

Originally from West Yorkshire, Gina was a farmer and horse breeder in Bedale, but had to travel between James Cook, the Friarage and Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) for her treatment.

Her bone marrow transplant took place at the LGI and while it was a success, tragically the medication she was on to prepare her for the operation had fatal side effects.

Steph said: “After seeing what Gina went through, and the difference the hospice made to her, her daughters and the rest of the family, I volunteered to run the London Marathon for the hospice and raise much needed funds so that other people could benefit from their support.

“My idea behind the dance-a-thon is to bring families and the community together and just have a great time dancing to all the best tunes from the last five decades whilst raising money for a good cause.

“You don’t need to be able to dance, it’s not a competition; it really is just about having fun on the dancefloor.”

A welcome mocktail and glow stick is included in the admission price.

Tickets cost £6.50 or £22 a family of four.

Under-4s get in free.

There will be festival face painting, a photo booth, funky festival nail stand, sweet cart and games available on the night.

There will also be a raffle with many prizes, including tickets for the Manfreds at the Garden Rooms at Tennants, lunch for two voucher at the Wensleydale Heifer, a Campbells hamper and VIP tickets to watch the Tour de Yorkshire.

“Support from businesses, many of them local to the area has been incredibly generous and I can’t thank them enough,” Steph added.
