A date has been set for the reopening of Richmond Swimming Pool following improvement work.

Contractors are set to hand back the keys to staff on December 23.

It is hoped the pool will then reopen to the public on January 7, with a new timetable set to start on Monday, January 9.

Richmondshire Leisure Trust general manager Auston Gordon said: “We will be planning a grand reopening celebration in early February 2023.

“Details of this event will be provided in early January 2023.”

The work, which was originally estimated to cost £1.4m, is the first major upgrade of the pool in three decades.

The project has included renewing the building’s roof coverings, acid cleaning and repairs of stonework, installing 56 photovoltaic solar panels on the south east aspect of the roof and adding an air source heat pump.

Councillors at Richmondshire District Council agreed to find an extra £462,000 due to increasing costs of the work.

There has been a six-week delay to the original schedule, with the district council also agreeing to pay compensation to the trust to cover the delays.

Mr Gordon said that during the closure, staff and trustees have been working behind the scenes to ensure a smooth reopening.

This work included first aid training, professional development, website improvements, a review of the health and safety manual and liaising with local schools.

Mr Gordon added: “We look forward to welcoming you back to your improved and updated swimming pool.

“Once again, I thank you for your continued understanding and patience.”
