The owner of a new shop selling dog treats hopes the store will become a tourist attraction.
The Dales Dog Deli is due to open in Leyburn market place on Saturday.
Owner Steve Benson said the shop was a “unique pick n mix store for dogs stocking a range of healthy and natural treats that are responsibly sourced”.
The 28-year-old, who lives in Carlton-in-Coverdale with his partner, said customers could pick from more than 50 different natural dog treats; then pay at the till by weight.
The business aims to be eco-friendly and plastic free, and will promote natural products and recycled dog toys as well as stocking other dog related Yorkshire Dales products.
Steve, who said he was “dog obsessed”, added: “As far as I’m aware, we are the only pay by weight pet shop in the UK.”
The qualified dog trainer who has qualifications in canine nutrition said he wanted the shop to be a tourist attraction for Leyburn, as well as a useful place for locals.
“Not only am I trying to change what we buy for our dogs by only stocking natural products, but I’m also trying to change how we shop for our dogs.
“My shop is a unique experience for dog owners with our pay by weight concept. But for locals I also want the shop to be a kind of club or community — somewhere owners and their dogs can come and seek advice or just talk about their dogs.”
