District council appoints climate change officer

Richmondshire District Council has appointed a climate change officer to help its ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Valerie Adams will be leading the work on a ten-year climate change action plan to help address the climate and ecological emergency declared by the council last year.

It will help to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions causing climate change.

The work will see her look at how those emissions can be reduced from the authority’s own operations and buildings – and helping to bring forward projects to achieve that.

She will also work with partners to develop and deliver projects to reduce carbon emissions and safeguard the environment and support community groups on their ambitions.

“This is a major step forward for the council and its ambitions to be carbon neutral,” said Councillor Philip Wicks, chairman of the climate change working group.

“Earlier this year the authority allocated £100,000 to take forward the climate change agenda.

“We will be looking at how we can reduce our own carbon footprint as well as helping communities to do the same.”
