District council housing service remains open

Richmondshire District Council says its housing service remains open for business but with a few changes in place.

With the key priority being to protect the health and wellbeing of council staff and tenants, face to face contact is being avoided as much as possible, and if it must take place precautions are in place.

Key services still available are:

  • REPAIRS: only urgent and emergency repairs are being undertaken and tenants will be asked about their health before an appointment can be made.  The operative will be wearing additional personal protective equipment, and in the case of home visits social distancing rules will be strictly observed.
  • SHELTERED HOUSING: sheltered housing wardens and relief wardens continue to provide a service for residents and comings and goings are being kept to an absolute minimum.  All properties are being deep cleaned with on-going cleaning focusing on disinfecting regularly used surfaces such as bannisters and door handles.  All letting activity related to flats within sheltered housing schemes is on hold in order to minimise entry into the properties.
  • RENT AND SERVICE CHARGES: these can still be paid and we are urging payments to be made wherever possible. However, anyone struggling to pay rent should contact the council as soon as possible on 01748 829100.
  • VACANT PROPERTIES: advertising vacant properties, dealing with bids and allocating them to successful bidders will continue – but they will not be signed for as repairs to get empty properties ready for new tenants are not being undertaken.

“Our landlord service team – which looks after our council housing – remains open for business, we are just doing things differently,” said corporate director, Colin Dales.

“Our key priority is to protect the health and wellbeing of our staff and our tenants by stopping the spread of the virus wherever we can.

“We have put measures in place to do just that and hope that people will respect our advice as we try to keep everyone safe.”
