Dog walker caught on dashcam failing to pick up after their pet

A dog walker has been fined after she was filmed on a dashcam failing to pick up after her pet.

The woman from Gilling West was recorded by another resident in the village walking off after her dog had fouled.

The footage was passed to Richmondshire District Council which used it as evidence to issue her with a fixed penalty notice.

This story continues after the adverts:

Sally Dixon, the council’s monitoring and enforcement supervisor, said the woman claimed she had not seen the fouling, but still agreed to pay the fine.

The notice is the first issued by the authority for dog fouling for several years and the council has urged other residents to send in similar footage and pictures.

Sally said the authority did carry out patrols but found that pet owners generally picked up their dog’s poo when they saw officers in the area.

She said they could not take action if it was just one member of the public’s account against another’s version of events.

“It’s an absolute minefield trying to catch people and that’s why we are appealing for the public’s help.

“Without the evidence we can’t do anything, but dashcam footage, CCTV images and photographs submitted by the public are acceptable.”

A recent freedom of information request submitted after the recent case found that no pet owners had been fined for failing to pick up after their pet in Richmondshire since 2016.

Before the recent case using the dashcam footage, the last fixed penalty notice issued for failing to remove dog faeces was in April 2016.

Two notices were issued in 2015 with four issued in 2014.

No fixed penalty notices have been issued in the last five years for failing to keep a dog on a lead when required to do so or when instructed by an authorised person.
